To maximize your wood’s unique features, we have developed a simple 2 step system.

Step 1   Prepare:

Enhance your wood by preparing it properly for coating

Step 2   Protect:

Long-term protection that highlights the natural beauty of your wood and improves dimensional stability.

Each product in the CUTEK® system has been designed to be easy to use and reduce the manual labour required for wood protection.

Maintenance is quick, simple and cost effective. CUTEK® Extreme does not flake or peel meaning you do not have to sand or strip again

It is important to PREPARE your wood properly, so that you can powerfully PROTECT it.

Understanding CUTEK® Colourtones

It’s important to understand that CUTEK® is a unique penetrating oil system designed to enhance the natural colour and grain of wood. CUTEK® is sold as a clear oil which can be used to protect the wood from moisture and moisture related movement such as cupping, warping and splitting. Using just the clear oil will protect the wood, providing stability and structural integrity while allowing it to naturally lighten to produce a silver weathered patina over time. The soft natural lightening and silvering of the wood represents a low care option and is becoming an increasingly popular way to leave wood in weather exposed settings.

Wood projects using clear CUTEK® Extreme that have silvered can easily be returned back to the wood’s original colour using CUTEK® Wood Reviver and high pressure washing followed by further applications of CUTEK® Extreme.

However, if you desire to maintain the original colour of the wood then you need to purchase a CUTEK® Colourtone suited to your selected wood which will further enhance the natural colour and grain and help to maintain its “natural” colour over a longer period of time.

What to expect when using CUTEK® Colourtones

Most wood care products on the market leave a build up of material on the surface of the wood. In the short term this provides more colour, but in the long term the finish can be prone to peeling and flaking, which requires time and money to repair.

The CUTEK® system is unique as it will fade, wear or erode, over time and with use, rather than peel or flake. The initial CUTEK® Colourtone intensity on new smooth wood projects only offers subtle amounts of pigment that enhance the wood. Wood that’s exposed fully to the weather will lighten faster as the wood acclimatizes. A follow up application after this initial weathering period will provide much greater Colourtone intensity as the wood becomes rougher and more open.

How to increase colour intensity on new wood

New wood is milled smooth and often has a mill glaze which will greatly restrict the initial colour adhesion. Better results can be achieved by creating a rougher surface and preparing the wood using CUTEK® Wood Reviver in combination with a high pressure washer. Sanding the new wood with 80 grit paper will give even better results as it removes mill glaze and creates a much rougher surface which will enable higher colour intensity.

NOTE: The rougher the surface of the wood, the greater the colour intensity and durability. Rough sawn or heavy brushed wood profiles will take more oil and colour so much bolder colour contrast can be achieved. The amount of mill glaze if any that is present on any job can vary significantly depending on species density, and machining method used. Note: sanded surfaces should be vacuumed or washed thoroughly to remove all loose wood and dust.

EXTERIOR WOOD

At CUTEK®, we are all about the wood. Wood brings colour, warmth, depth and beauty to any project. CUTEK® products offer long-term, powerful protection for wood while highlighting its natural warmth, feel and beauty.

CUTEK® Extreme has been independently tested and is proven to offer powerful, long-term protection, cost effective maintenance and dimensional stability improvements that stand up to the most extreme environments. For over 30-years and across many countries, CUTEK® is the trusted name in wood protection.

Superior Mode Of Action

Traditional varnish and natural oil ‘penetrating’ type coatings work by forming a protective film on the surface of the wood to protect against moisture damage. Over time, UV rays as well as liquid and gas phase moisture induced wood movement, break down this film causing it to degrade, flake or peel. This allows water to get into the wood which can lead to cupping, warping, splitting and rot. Fixing this is costly and time consuming as the old coating will need to be stripped away before reapplying.

CUTEK® Extreme is different. CUTEK® Extreme penetrates deep into the wood core and drives moisture out of the wood from the inside. This offers superior long-term protection and minimizes cupping, warping and splitting. This penetrating oil technology ensures the longest possible service life for your wood and has been proven to work and independently tested by industry experts in many countries over the last 30 years.

Self-Healing Effect

CUTEK® Extreme works differently to traditional wood stain/wood oil/acrylic/urethane/natural oils/wood coating products in that CUTEK® Extreme protects your wood from the inside out. CUTEK® Extreme penetrates deeply into the wood core upon application, protecting it from the damaging effects of liquid and gas phase water, significantly increasing the service life of your wood. It does this by remaining PERMANENTLY MOBILE inside the wood, migrating to any cut or perforation with a self-healing action.

Many competitive products claim to be a penetrating oil finish; however, they often contain a mixture of solvents, polymers and cross-linking natural oils (such as linseed and tung oils) that penetrate only a few millimetres before drying to form an encapsulating type varnish. Because these coatings do not have a self-healing effect, once this varnish is exposed to the weather, water can quickly enter the core of the wood especially if it has been cut or perforated with fasteners leading to a rapid loss of dimensional stability. Additionally, the use of some natural oils in wood coatings can contribute to the development of unsightly mould and fungal growth underneath subsequently applied coatings. This situation can be difficult and costly to fix.
